The Helvetino was designed by the Boxtec forum and Freaky Friday communities. The goal was to have a low-cost Arduino compatible board with enough prototyping space to accomodate some simple circuits directly on the board.
The board was designed by dinoi and Arduino Praxis with the support and feedback of other members of the community. The Flowerpad part for Fritzing was designed by Mathias Wilhelm.
The Helvetino comes as kit for soldering and is easy to assmble. While it contains one SMD part (the NCP1117 LDO voltage regulator) it is still suitable for beginners to solder. It features the popular ATmega328 microcontroller but no USB interface, so it has to be programmed with a USB-TTL adapter. The Helvetino has an FTDI compatible connection header and is working great with any FTDI adapter or cable.
What is special about the Helvetino is that it features Flowerpads instead of regular soldering joints in the prototyping space. This allows you to mount THT and simple SMD components without any adapter or breakout board.
Features:
- Arduino compatible board
- Powerful 5V LDO regulator
- FTDI header for programming (see below for recommended FTDI adapters)
- Large prototyping area with Flowerpads for SMT and THT
- Reset button and two indicator LEDs (red/green) for power and Pin13
- Reverse protection on Vin
- Completely open source
- Arduino Uno bootloader (Optiboot) preinstalled
Note: The Helvetino comes unassembled and you will need a few tools to build it. It is suited for soldering beginners. See the assembly instructions for the tools needed.
Note: While the Helvetino has an ISP labeled connector, it is not connected to any pins of the ATmega328. If you want to use the ISP you have to wire it up and connect it to the ATmega328. The connector is merely there so that you have it at the right place if you need it. This might change in a future version of Helvetino.
