The sensor is reasonably accurate, but I get a resolution worse than 3mm when closer than 10cm. Farther than this, the distance is very accurate. The formulae above is a bit misleading. To calculate the distance you should use distance = 0.017*(t2-t1), where t1 is the instant (in sec) you triggered the signal (the change from low back to high in TRIGGER), and t2 is the time when the ECHO pin changed from high to low. Then the above formula is correct if we interpret time as being t2-t1.
